CBI ARRESTS GST SUPDTT AND MIDDLE MAN IN BRIBERY, SENT TO JUDICIAL CUSTODY TILL AUGUST 16

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) salueths reported to have arrested superintendent of the newly- established GST Council  Monish Malhotra and Middle man Manas Patra while accepting bribe on Wednesday evening.  This could be the first instance of a GST Council official being arrested by the central investigating agency. CBI said Monish Malhotra, who was earlier posted in Central Excise, has been indulging in corrupt practices of extending undue favours to private parties by not taking action against them in return for periodic bribes. 

The CBI came to know that middleman Patra was allegedly establishing contact with the parties on Malhotra's behalf and collecting illegal gratification on quarterly or monthly basis.  Patra deposited these funds in his own account to camouflage the bribe and later transferred the money to an HDFC Bank account of Malhotra's wife Shobhna and his daughter Aiyushi's account in ICICI Bank. the CBI FIR alleged. CBI team laid a trap and caught both the accused when the Tax Consultant had handed over Rs. 10,000/- to Superintendentl who accepted the same.

Searches were conducted at the premises of both the accused including office & residence. Currency notes amounting to Rs.7 Lakh(apprx) were recovered during the search at the residence of Superintendent. Both the arrested accused were produced  before the Special Judge, CBI Cases, Patiala House Courts, New Delhi and were sent to judicial custody till 16.08.2017
