BALDEV SINGH APPOINTED CHIEF COACH OF KU HOCKEY ACADEMY

The newly established Hockey Academy at Khalsa University today appointed Dronacharya Award winner international repute hockey coach Baldev Singh as its chief coach. He was earlier associated with the Shahbad (Haryana) based Hockey Academy which has produced Olympians and international level players and has been in the Committee of Experts for the 2020 Olympics Preparation of the Country.

Baldev Singh joined the assignment in presence of KU Pro Chancellor RMS Chhina and Vice Chancellor Dr. GS Walia. Baldev had been the Assistant Coach, Coach and Chief Coach at various national level and retired from the sports department of Haryana government. He said that the facilities for the sports persons in Haryana are one of the best in the country and Punjab must follow a visionary policy for the sports’ promotion.

Chhina said that Baldev Singh will be an asset for the new academy which aims to promote women hockey at the national and international level. He said recently Academy’s start hockey player Ritu was selected for the Hockey India (Women) team’s national camp being held at Bangluru (Karnataka). Vice Chancellor Dr. GS Walia said that under Baldev Singh the academy would flourish as he had already produced a number of Olympians and national level hockey players.

``India’s top hockey players including Sandeep Kaur, Ritu Rani, Rani Rampal, Sandeep Singh have received training from him. We have targeted that our students play in national, international and even in the coming Olympics’’, said Dr.Walia. KU Director (Sports) Dr. Kanwaljit Singh said that apart from Chief Coach Baldev Singh, Amarjit Singh had been appointed as Coach and they are the best team to train the players to the international repute.

They said that the focus is especially on the women sports and the management was already in the process to establish world class infrastructure for the sports. ``The hostels and playgrounds are in the pipeline for the academy which is having 35 junior and senior players so far’’, said Chhina adding that Khalsa College Charitable Society was committed to give impetus to the women sports.

``Out of these 35 players, 7 players have represented India already in various Hockey tournaments last year and more will be going to play for the country in the coming days’’, said VC Dr.Walia.
