Panjab University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) organized an event today at UIET to mark Teachers’ Day, to acclimatize the young teachers to the glorious past of PUTA. Eminent speakers, who spearheaded PUTA long back, and toiled hard to safeguard teachers’ interests on the campus, including Prof. P.P.Arya, Sh. Sarup Singh and Prof. Anirudh Joshi, addressed the teachers.

They shared their experiences of struggle as office bearers of PUTA and urged young teachers to develop activism with grit and conviction, to put in place a transparent and democratic system and rich academic environment. They stated in no uncertain terms that authorities must not instill fear in the minds of teachers, but PUTA has to instill fear in the mind of authorities as a watchdog and savior of democratic and egalitarian values.

They inspired the teachers by citing live examples of long and difficult struggle with which they succeeded in establishing democratic system of rotation of headship in departments and pension scheme for teachers. Teachers wore black badges as a symbol of protest, in support of the call given by AIFUCTO today, to get the Chouhan Committee Report for 7th PRC published and implemented uniformly across the country at the earliest.

A PUTA delegation joined the protest at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, in the Court Arrest programme. An Emergent General Body Meeting of PUTA was also held today in which a resolution on the grant of Central Status for Panjab University was unanimously passed. The resolution shall be put up for the forthcoming meeting of the Senate on 10th September 2017.
