16 ANTIQUE STOLEN PASHMINA SHAWLS HAVING HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE OF NATIONAL ESSENCE WORTH TWO CRORES RECOVERED.

Delhi Police reported to have recovered 16 antique stolen pashmina shalws valuing Rs.2 crores and arrested the accused.

Mr.B.K.Singh DCP, said on 31-10-17, a PCR call was received at P.S.-TilakMarg, New Delhi regarding a theft committed at National Handicrafts & Handlooms Museum, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. Complainant D. Rama Krishna Rao,Admin & Security Officer handed over a written complaint stating thereinthat the Gallery was closed on 29-10-2017 (Sunday) at about 17:00 hrs. andopened on 31-10-2017 at around 09:30hrs. While opening of the Gallery by Sh. Shahajanhan Ansari, Weaver Grade-I,In-Charge/Custodian of Gallery, it revealed that 16 shawls (Kashmir) were missing from display boards. On the basis of the complaint, the above said casewas registered and investigation was taken up.

The case was related to the theft of 16 Antique Kashmiri Shawls of the finest quality having historicimportance from the National Handicrafts and Handlooms Museum in LutyensDelhi. These shawls were brought fromKashmir and are 200-250 Years old. It was a blind case and a challenge for Delhi Policeas there was no clue about the thieves and stolen property. As the case was of national significance, aspecial team was constituted.

He said under the overall supervision of ACP/Barakhamba Road, Sh. Rajesh Kumar Sharma a team led byInspr. Naresh Solanki, SHO/PS Tilak Marg, New Delhi comprising SI SanjeevKumar, SI Sunil Kumar, HC Narender, HC Rajesh, HC Devender, HC Yogesh, Const.Monu, Const. Monu Kumar of PS Tilak Marg was constituted who carried outmeticulous investigation of the case.

The investigation of the case was totallybased on the technical analysis and required very hard work dedicated andfocussed attention by a considerable number of manpower despite having responsibility of heavy law and orderarrangement duty being the area falling in VVIP Zone including everyday functionsat India Gate. Cracking of this case is a result of hard work, dedication anddeep coordination among the police team involved in the investigation of thecase.

STRATEGY TO NAB THE BURGLARS & OPERATION

A strategic plan was prepared to nab the thieves/Burglars. It was learnt that two persons had been regularly visiting the Museum,one of them posing as scholar researching on the antiques. On 22-10-2017 one of them had hid himself inthe Museum for exercising his pre-planned strategy to steal. After about 1 ½ hour, the suspected personshad raised an alarm from inside and when he was brought outside the Museum, hestated that during his confinement in the Museum, he had been giving signalsbefore the CCTV Camera; but no one came to free him. At that time, the accusedperson came to know that the CCTV Cameras of the Museum, where the antiqueswere kept, are not working. Lastly on 29-10-2017 the suspected person alongwithhis associate had visited the Museum.

Aftera long technical analysis, it was revealed that the mobile phone of one of thesuspected persons Vinay Parmar was active on 29-10-2017 in the surroundingareas of National Museum, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi and he was in regularcontact with the co-accused persons and various calls were exchanged betweenthem. As per the technical analysis ofmobile phone numbers of accused and his associates locations were found in Kolkata, West Bengal.

Hence, a police team departed for Kolkata to apprehend the suspected persons, where araid was conducted on 13-11-2017. The accused Vinay Parmar was apprehended froma Hotel situated at Pratapaditya Road, Kolkata and accused Tarun Harvodiya, wasalso apprehended from another Hotel situated at Tollygungem Kolkata. Both the accused persons were interrogated atlength and on confirmation about their involvement, the accused persons were arrested and brought to Delhi on transit remand.

Police said accused Vinay Parmar (28) a native from District-Surender Nagar, Gujarat studied upto 10th standard in Old Rajinder Nagar, New Delhi. He is residing separately from his parents and dealing with thereadymade garments business in Paschim Puri, Delhi.

The accused has learnt language courses of French and German. He has visited France, Germany and Chinaalso. He is having good knowledge about antiques and their importance. Accused  Tarun Harvodiya, Age-25 Years, native from District-Surender Nagar, Gujarat studied upto 12thstandard in Paschim Puri, Delhi and stammers. He is running a small rented shop of bags, shawls and sarees atJanpath. He was residing with his motherand his father and had left his family for the last about 18 years.  

 Mohd. Adil Sheikh, Age-40 Years,  resident of Abul Fazal Enclave, Jamia Nagar,Delhi and studied upto B.Sc. He works asan exporter and a vendor of Central Cotton Industries (CCI). His father was also an exporter of antiquetextiles. He is having good knowledge of Hindi and English and visited all overIndia and foreign countries.

RECOVERY: All the stolen articles i.e.16 Antique Pashmina shawls having historic importance have been recovered at the instance of the accused persons..

PROCEEDINGS OF FURTHER INVESTIGATION & DISCOSURE:

The National Crafts Museum from where the shawls were stolen does not have functional CCTV Cameras. The accused persons had tried to mislead the police, but failed in their plan. The arrested persons subjected to sustained interrogation in detailed by the police investigation team constituted specially to arrest the accusedpersons. During sustained interrogation they disclosed that they were inspiredby the movie Dhoom-2 in which the actor Hrithik Roshan commits theft of Antiqueitems.

During their 6 days of police custody remand, 15 stolen shawlshaving historical importance and rich national heritage have been recovered at their instance from Delhi and Kolkata, West Bengal. Accused Vinay Parmar and Tarun Harvodiya have disclosed that remaining 1 shawl is in the possession of one of the other associates namely Mohd. Adil Sheikh, who is hiding himself in Uttar Pradesh. They further disclosed that Mohd. Adil Sheikh is an exporter for antique items and used to visit all over India and foreign countries.

During further remand period of 3 days of the accused persons the remaining case property i.e. one shawl was also recovered from co-accused Mohd Adil Sheikh from Abul Fazal Enclave, Okhla, Delhi.
