PUNJAB , HARYANA AND UT ADMINISTRATION AGREES TO DELETE CASTE COLUMN IN POLICE RECORDS AND FIRs

“Caste (in Police records) will be a thing of the past”-Punjab, Haryana and UT Chandigarh administration agree to delete the column of caste in Police Records and FIRs:

Coming on the heels of a similar written statement filed by the State of Haryana, a written statement was filed today ( during the resumed hearing of a PIL filed by Advocate Hari Chand Arora, ) under signatures of Naveen Saini, IGP, Administration, Bureau of Investigation, to the effect that “The State is of the view that mentioning of caste etc. in the forms used under the Punjab Police Rules, which were framed in the year 1934, has no relevance in the present scenario, except where required under the specific statute, like SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. It has also been disclosed in the written statement that the National Crime Records Bureau, New Delhi has been requiring from all States the data of accused persons, including their caste. The DGP, Information Technology and Communications, Punjab has therefore, sent a letter dated 18.10.2017 to the said National Crime Records Bureau that the latter should not insist on information about caste of the accused.

The Counsel for UT Chandigarh administration also made a statement before the Division Bench comprising Justices Ajay Kumar Mittal, that UT Chandigarh administration has also taken a decision that columns regarding caste of the accused persons shall be deleted from various forms used under the Police Rules, although he sought a little more time for filing a formal written statement.hearing, the State of Haryana had also filed a written statement to the same effect. The matter has been adjourned to 15.1.2017 for further proceedings.
