INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED INDIAN ATOMIC SCIENTIST PROF. BALDEV RAJ PASSES AWAY

One of India's most renowned nuclear scientists, Prof Baldev Raj, 70, Director, National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bangalore, passed away while attending a conference in Pune on Saturday. A recipient of Padma Shri, professor Raj held many prestigious key posts including Director, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research in Kalpakkam (Tamil Nadu).

 One of India's most renowned nuclear scientists, Prof Baldev Raj, 70, Director, National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bangalore, passed away while attending a conference in Pune on Saturday. A recipient of Padma Shri, professor Raj held many prestigious key posts including Director, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research in Kalpakkam (Tamil Nadu).

Prof Arun Kumar Grover,Vice Chancellor,Panjab University informed that Prof.Raj made substantial  contributions in the domains of Science & Technology Policies, Energy, Medical Technologies, Nanoscience  and Technology Innovations. He overcame barriers of academic research and industry with acumens of leadership and experiences. He is widely acknowledged for promoting interdisciplinary education in the domains of science and humanities,he added.

Author of around 1,000 academic papers in peer reviewed journals and more than 70 books, the professor won more than 100 awards and assignments in 30 countries including USA, U.K and Germany, Prof Grover informed.

Prof Baldev Raj headed over 100 high level committees, set up by the government for uplift of science,  technology and education including Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT-Gandhinagar; Chancellor & Chairperson, Board of Governors, Academy of CSIR (GoI), Chairman; Board of Governors, National Institute of Technology (NIT), Pondicherry, Chairman of BRICS Science & Technology Enterprise Partnership (BRICS- STEP) and BRIKC Expert Panel Committee on International Collaborations in Advanced Materials, Nanotechnology and Astrophysics. He was recipient of D.Sc (honoris causa) from four universities and a distinguished professor of IIT-Mumbai and IIT-Kharagpur. Prof Raj mentored hundreds of students, scientists and  technologists, inspiring them to pursue high levels of professionalism in science and technology without losing sight of the need for exemplary ethical practices,Prof Grover informed.

Appreciating the experience and leadership qualities of Prof. Baldev Raj, Ministry of Science & Technology,  GoI, appointed him as Chairman to spearhead an ambitious and challenging project of establishing and mentoring Science Policy Research Centres across India. One such Centre is in Panjab University,  Chandigarh with which he was intimately attached. The success and acceptance of this Centre by policy- makers of India is credited to professor Baldev Raj, who took personal interest in the activities of this Centre, said professor Rupinder Tewari, Coordinator of the Centre.
