The Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), Chandigarh celebrated its 34thFoundation Day today by organizing several events, the most important among those being a Foundation Day Lecture by, Prof. AchyutaSamanta, Founder, Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) and Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences on the topic“Social Innovation and Sustainable Society”. Throughout the day, several students and researchers from other Institutions visited the labs of the Institute to know about the research being carried out at this premier national lab. 

Prof. AchyutaSamanta used example of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences as a role model for social innovations through which millions of lives can be touched and transformed. He emphasized that quality education can help in eradication of problems of poorest of poor. He also cited examples of Sumitra Nayak, a national rugby player and RanjeetNayak, an archery player coming out of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences where free education with boarding and lodging is provided to tribal children from Kinder Garden to Post Graduation. He emphasized on “Art-of-Giving” for leading to a peaceful and content full individual life and a sustained society. 

Dr. Anil Koul, Director, IMTECH welcomed the guests and then presented the Institutional Progress. He highlighted the achievements of IMTECH during the last couple of years through a formal presentation which was greatly appreciated by the audience. He said that IMTECH was consistently a top performer amongst all CSIR labs in terms of quality (Impact Factor) of research publications. He particularly mentioned the growth of business driven research in IMTECH which he felt not only created a competitive environment but has also brought in national and international level recognition to its scientists. He said that in the last few years the Institute has made extraordinary progress in terms of external cash flow from both sponsored projects and industry licensing of technologies. He said that it was because of a healthy ambience that has been created at IMTECH since its very founding, that has encouraged its scientists to grow and give their best as reflected in its research publications, patents, generation of Know-hows etc. At IMTECH, he gave the examples of co-operative, integrative programs such as on microbial diversity and therapeutic proteins that focus on team building to achieve ambitious, tangible outcomes.The talk was well attended and well received. On this occasion, the Institute also rewarded some of its meritorious technical staff for their outstanding performances.
