Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh celebrated the Republic Day with patriotic fervour and enthusiasm at the University campus.PU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Arun K. Grover was the Chief Guest of the function.He unfurled the national flag at the Parade Ground.

It was followed by the inspection of the Guard of Honour comprising the contingents of PU Security Staff, PU NCC boys & Girls cadets, Ankur School and Guru Gobind Singh Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Ratwara Sahib. While felicitating the gathering, Prof Grover in his key note adress, urged all to rise above differences and contribute in the growth of the country.

He referred to various recent initiatives and achievements of the University. Underlining the importance of the Day for the University, PU VC Prof. Grover said, “The transition from East Panjab University to Panjab University happened on the first Republic Day, January 26, 1950.” Prof Grover expressed special thanks to the Central Government and Sh V P Singh Badnore, Hon'ble Governor of Pb. and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh for all support to PU in bringing it out of financial hardships. He further informed that the years 2018 & 2019 are very significant for PU as these coincide with the centenary of initiation of departments of PU and approval of Honours School System for PU at Lahore.

He added that PU has taken steps to enhance its interaction with the higher ranked global Universities in Canada, UK and Australia to attract faculties from such institutions to visit PU. Earlier, Col G S Chadha, Registrar, PU in his welcome adress, appreciated the able leadership and never-say-die attitude of Prof Grover, VC,PU which helped PU to emerge from financial instabilities.He added that the landmark academic leadership of Prof Grover has attracted galaxy of eminent speakers from within the country and abroad to deliver lectures at PU.He urged all to rededicate to their duties and responsibilities to take PU to greater heights.PU with its multi-faceted fraternity, epitomizes that is best in India today.

On this occasion, four PU employees namely Sh. Sushil Kumar, Stenographer, Department of Geography, Dr. Ved Parkash Sharma, Senior Scientific Officer (G-I), Department of Zoology, Sh. Karam Chand, Senior Technician (G-II) and Sh. Sukhdev Sharma, Superintendent (Syndicate Section), General Branch were felicitated with commendation certificate and memento in recognition of their distinguished services. Colourful cultural program enthralled the audience. It started with a patriotic song by the students of PU Music Department.

It was followed by Haryanvi Dance by students of GGSVM Sr. Sec. School, Ratwara Sahib; Pankhida, a Gujrati Garba dance by Ankur School Students; Luddi, a folk dance of Punjab by the girls of G.N.N. College, Doraha and song sung by Sh. Hardev Singh, Ex-Servicement Security Guard, Security Staff. All senior officials of PU, Senate and Syndicate members, Deans, PUTA President, faculty, students and their families were present on the occasion.
