Childless, and wary of in vitro fertilization (IVF)? Well, hope is still there for those who have been avoiding IVF, fearing having a child with congenital defects, having twins or even a miscarriage.  Advancement in medical science has found an answer to these stumbling blocks in the path to parenthood - Preimplantation genetic screening (PGS). And what better, you can avail this facility in your own city, thanks to the efforts of renowned IVF expert, Dr. Preeti Jindal of the The Touch Clinic, Mohali. The Touch Clinic is the only place in North India, beyond Delhi, where PGS technique is available, and that too, at very economical rates.

Pointing to the risks associated with IVF, Dr. Jindal said, “In vitro fertilisation (IVF) or test tube baby is becoming very helpful method to give happiness of parenthood to infertile couples. Despite best drugs, equipments and centers, the success rate still lingers around 30%-40%. Main reason for it is genetically abnormal embryo”.

Addressing a press conference here today, Dr. Preeti Jindal informed that PGS is a screening process that helps attain a successful pregnancy and a healthy baby by implanting only the healthiest embryos.

“PGS has come as a big help in avoiding such unwanted outcomes”, she added.

Divulging more about the screening technique, Dr. Jindal said, “PGS or preimplantation genetic screening is a genetic test performed on embryo before transfer. It helps in identifying abnormal embryos and improves chances of achieving successful pregnancy to 50 % and above. It identifies embryos with correct number of chromosomes so that the IVF team can select healthy embryos for transfer”.

Explaining the benefits of PGS the renowned IVF expert said, “PGS increases the chances of pregnancy and at the same time reduces the risks of miscarriage. Only a single embryo is transferred avoiding the chances of twins or triplets, and the health risks associated with them. The number of IVF cycles needed to achieve pregnancy is lessened, potentially reducing the time to attain pregnancy and the costs of extra cycles”.

PGS is appropriate for the vast majority of people undergoing IVF.  All women are at risk of producing chromosomally abnormal embryos. As a woman ages, the potential for chromosomally abnormal embryos significantly increases, regardless of the number of embryos produced.  PGS is especially recommended in cases where women are above 35 years in age, women who have had two or more miscarriages, women who have faced two or more IVF failures, and there is low quantity and/or quality of sperm.

Ideally, PGS should be done in all IVF patients but due to limitations of technology, availability and cost, it is till date available in few centres in India. The touchclinic is only centre which is providing this facility in-house, and at very economical rates for benefit of infertile couple

The Touch clinic has got international accreditation from Spain to perform this test.
