Chandigarh(Face2News)

Referendum-2020 result of a consistent policy of bias, discrimination and persecution  towards the Sikhs by successive central governments, says, Punjab Opposition Leader in Assembly Mr. Sukhpal Singh  Khaira

Retorting to certain planted news that he was a supporter of the ongoing 2020 referendum seeking a separate state for Sikhs, LoP Khaira clarified that although he never supported the said move but he has no hesitation to admit, that it is a result of an unending discrimination and persecution of the Sikhs by successive central governments post partition.

Khaira lambasted the new brand of Akali’s i.e. Sukhbir and Majithia that before issuing statements against him they should introspect the role of their patron Parkash Singh Badal. He said Badal was not only signatory to the original Anandpur Sahib resolution of 1972 but also burnt copies of the constitution of India, before the parliament in 1983. Similarly Badal is also responsible to instigate Sikh army officers and Jawans to break their barracks and march towards Amritsar to avenge the attack on Darbar Sahib, said Khaira.

LoP Khaira reminded those at the helm of affairs that it was due to great sacrifices made by Sikhs and Punjabi’s that India won its freedom. Although the British had offered Sikhs a separate and sovereign country but yet they opted to be part of the Indian state, said Khaira. He said it is also a matter of record, that the Sikhs were the worst sufferers of partition as they had to migrate lock, stock and barrel to India.

Khaira said the first blow to Sikhs came in the shape of a truncated Punjabi Suba, although all the states of India were reorganised on linguistic basis, Sikhs had to launch a “Morcha” to get a Punjabi speaking state in 1966, yet many Punjabi speaking areas were left out. Khaira said Haryana and Himachal Pradesh got a better deal at the cost of Punjab without any efforts or struggle.

The second blow came in shape of unfair distribution of our river waters, that were erroneously awarded to Rajasthan and Haryana against the natural principle of riparian laws and in violation of Section 78, 79 and 80 of the Reorganization Act, said Khaira.

Major blow ofcourse was inflicted upon the Sikhs through an unparalleled army attack upon Darbar Sahib, infamously known as Operation Blue Star demolishing the Akal Takhat besides killing hundreds of devotes inside the Golden Temple, wounds of which will never be healed, stated Khaira. As if the attack on Darbar Sahib wasn’t enough to alienate the Sikhs, a well planned annihilation of Sikhs was carried out in the shape of state sponsored anti Sikh riots in 1984 brutally killing thousands across the country. The wounds of genocide of Sikhs at such large scale that included rape of women, arson, loot etc., are still raw and unforgettable. The worst part is that no justice has been rendered to the Sikhs even 34 years after the genocide, said Khaira.

Khaira said apart from the above stated inhuman persecution of Sikhs as a community, there are other acts of discrimination like black listing thousands of Sikhs living abroad, not returning the rarest of rare manuscripts that were taken by the army during Operation Blue Star from the Sikh Reference Library 34 years ago, which continue to haunt the memory of Sikhs.

Khaira said although he does not agree with 2020 referendum but it was due to this consistent policy of persecution of Sikhs that they have been pushed to the brink to demand a separate homeland for themselves. Therefore, he said he was of the firm view that the Government of India must review its anti Sikh policies and instead apply balm on the grievous injuries inflicted upon the Sikh psyche.

In the same breath, Khaira lambasted the new brand of Akali’s i.e.

Khaira also reminded the new Akali duo that Mr. Badal was also a part of the delegation led by Mr. S.S. Mann to meet the then visiting United Nations Secretary General Mr. Boutras Boutras Ghali at Delhi in 1992, to demand a “Right to self determination for Sikhs” which is similar to the 2020 referendum. Therefore, Khaira chided the new Akali’s to first advice senior Badal to apologise for his anti national acts before pointing a finger at him.
