CHANDIGARH PRESS CLUB HOLD SILENT PROTEST AGAINST THE JOURNALIST KILLING IN SRINAGAR

Observed mourn, created human chain and submitted memo to UT Administrator

The Chandigarh Press Club today condemned the killing of journalist Shujaat Bukhari by holding a silent protest and condolence meet today at Chandigarh Press Club. The Editor-in-Chief of English daily ‘Rising Kashmir’ was shot dead outside his office in Srinagar on Thursday.

“The entire media fraternity in Chandigarh & tricity expresses shock and disgust at the brutal killing of Shujaat Bukhari and condemn the killing of someone who was truly passionate toward his profession. Govt has failed to secure the interests of fraternity which is a matter of great concern.” said Barinder Singh Rawat, President, Chandigarh Press Club while expressing his resentments during the ocassion. While demanding the culprits behind the act be immediately arrested and punished, he also sought safety and security for all journalists.

Members of them edia fraternity were holding placards demanding the safety against the brutalities taken place in the recent times.The media persons also observed two minute silence for the peace of departed soul. Human Chain was created by present members to signify their unity."Terror attack that took Shujaat Bukhari's life shows that lives of journalists are not at all safe. Forces inimical to restoring peace in Kashmir Valley have silenced a voice of reason, logic and peace”.said. Saurabh Duggal, Senior Vice President, CPC.“His murder can only be viewed as yet another attempt to muzzle the media and the freedom of the press in the valley. Security of journalists in the Jammu and Kashmir is a matter of concern and the incident was an attempt to stall fearless coverage of anti-national and anti-people activities”. said Rajinder Nagarkoti, Vice President, CPC.

Describing Bukhari as a respected and courageous journalist, Jaswant Rana, Secretary General. CPC said his independent views were highlyvisible in the social media also. He was respected as a courageous journalist propagating his independent views from the disturbed areas of the valley,”
