Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama expressed his condolences on the demise of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

In a letter to Vajpayee’s foster daughter Namita Bhattacharya, he wrote, “I feel privilege to have known him and an honoured to have counted him as a friend. We met regularly during the course of his career and I continued to visit him even after his retirement from active politics.”

He said Vajpayee was a truly dedicated politician. “With his passing away, India has lost an eminent national leader. His eloquent support to the Tibetan people began in there late 1950s.

Since then, he regularly took Indian governments to task in parliament, prompting them to take a stronger stand on Tibet, “the spiritual leader said in his letter.

Meanwhile, Tibetan administration at its headquarters here also expressed its condolences. Tibetan Prime Minister Lobsang Sangay said Vajpayee was one of the giants in Indian politics and one of the strongest voices for Tibet.

Vajpayee had come to Dharamshala in 1967 for the first time. He ws here for campaigning during Lok Sabha elections. He had made several visits to Kangra district in 1980, 1982, 1983,1989 and then in 2003.
