On the 2nd day of the 13th edition of the CII Agro Tech India 2018, farmers from far-flung of areas attended the session of ‘Kisan Goshthees’ where dignitaries from the agriculture sector shared deep insights on Medicinal Farming and Aromatic Farming and shared the best practices on Cultivation of  Medicinal and Aromatic Plants.

Rakesh Yadav, Senior Scientist, Center for Aromatic Plants, Selaqui, Dehradun discussed about the benefits of Lemon Grass, Aromatic plants, which can grow easily in the drought areas. He said, “It has a large market and the oil extracted from these crops can be stored for a long period under any weather condition with no complication”.

He suggested to the farmers that ‘Lemon Grass’ is a crop which can grow in the drought areas with minimal investment. He said “Cultivating in 1-hectare land cost around Rs. 50,000 and produce in a year 200 to 225 litres oil for next five years.”

Considering Uttarakhand, where a majority of land is barren, can turn to lush and green with the cultivation of Lemon grass (aromatic crop).

Progressive Farmer, Gurpreet Singh stressed on the fact that “Farmer has to be Researcher first” which plays a key role in the whole process from sowing seeds to selling in the market. He said, “Research is very important before planning what to grow and how to grow according to the different environmental conditions and should conduct all research relevant to it.

He added that the whole process should be synchronized. The farmer should be intelligent enough and should know all the details of the crop planning to grow. “Every farmer should be a scientist himself,” he said.

Dipti Vats, an entrepreneur, said, “The role of marketing is of paramount importance. First we need to understand the demand of the market. Despite rich medicinal and aromatic field, we are importing products from different countries. India is a big market with all potentials; we should launch more products in the field which can replace the foreign brand in the market.” She added that entrepreneurs should come forward and work together so that we can achieve our goal.
