FEROZEPUR: The situation became “awkward” today during the press conference of the leaders belonging to Rai Sikh community who owe allegiance to Congress party. These Rai Sikh congress leaders had come to express their views about the candidature of Cabinet Minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi and sitting MP Sher Singh Ghubaya as Congress candidate from Ferozepur. However, they started arguing with each other in front of the media persons.

As per the information available, the Rai Sikh leaders including Hardip Singh President All India Rai Sikh Biradari, Mohinder Singh Chhanga Secretary PPCC, Malkit Singh Hira Vice President SC Cell PPCC, Bagicha Singh Member Zila Parishad, Hardip Singh President All India Shiromani Panchayat and others reached Press Club Ferozepur for a press conference. The conference was started by Malkit Singh Hira, who had contested the assembly polls in 2012 against Sukhbir Badal from Jalalabad. Hira started praising the contribution of Cabinet Minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi towards the Rai Sikh community in the beginning of the Press conference. He said it was only due to Rana Gurmit Sodhi that the Rai Sikh community got the SC status. Meanwhile, one of the members who were accompanying with them raised his objection and said nothing in favor or objectionable should be said about anyone.

The agitated member identified as Joginder Singh from Village Baler ke in Jalalabad. He was pacified by the other members.

Later, these Rai Sikh leaders demanded to the party president Rahul Gandhi that since this seat has not been won by Congress for the last 34 years, an appropriate candidate should be selected by the party. “It is very sad the voters of the Rai Sikh community which play an important role in this constituency have always been neglected. Now we demand a candidate who has his roots in Congress so that justice could be done with the Rai Sikhs”, they said.

It is obvious that since Ghubaya has joined Congress, the Rai Sikh voters are divided and confused and several fractions of Rai Sikh community have surfaced. Every day the various Rai Sikh leaders owing allegiance to various parties giving statements in favor of their parties.

It is pertinent to mention here that Rai Sikh community plays a vital role in the selection of any candidate from this seat. Even the parties select their candidate on the basis of their caste.
