Ferozepur, March 12- Aiming to save the environment from the hazardous effects of plastic, the Deputy Commissioner Chander Gaind on Tuesday said that the central jail complex would be made plastic-free zone.   

During an inspection of the jail complex, the DC said that any type of material inside the jail would be allowed only in utensils or paper carry bags and asked the jail authorities to inform the persons who come to meet the inmate in the jail about this. 

The jail authorities had brought the issue of garbage lifting from the jail following which deputy commissioner said that environment-friendly carry or paper bags can be instrumental in eliminating the environmental problem being caused by plastic bags. 

Gaind said that the paper bags do not cause any harm to the environment or human health whereas the plastic bags do not get decomposed for several years. Gaind also conducted the checking of food served to the inmates and visited the kitchen. He inspected the utensils in which the food was prepared and tasted the food to check the quality of the meal served. 

He further directed the EO Charanjeet Singh to train the employees of the jail department for making compost from food waste produced in the kitchen. 

The deputy commissioner also visited drug de-addiction center in the jail and interacted with the persons undergoing treatment in the center. He also checked the health services being offered in the hospital.   

Gaind also went to an industrial unit in the jail where the jail authorities informed him that the unit had sold the clothing worth Rs 23 lakh in February this year and earned 10 per cent profit. Moreover, he also went to women prisoners and also took the stock of school being running in the jail complex.
