MASSES BEING SENSITIZED FOR EXERCISING ‘RIGHT TO VOTE’ THROUGH ‘SVEEP’

 “In view of the Lok Sabha elections-2019 to ensure maximum participation of voters from Punjab, the office of the Chief Electoral Officer is sensitizing the masses through ‘Systematic Voter Education And Voter Participation’ (SVEEP). The main aim of SVEEP is to generate awareness among all sections of the society about exercising their democratic right to vote.” This was disclosed here today by the Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab, Dr. S. Karuna Raju while interacting with the mediapersons. 

He further said that the Election Commission of India commenced the SVEEP initiative at National level in 2010. The chief aim of SVEEP is to enroll each eligible citizen as voter and afterwards encourage every enrolled voter to cast his/her vote. Another aim of the initiative is to propel ethical voting and emphasize the importance of free and fair elections besides making people aware regarding EVM-VVPAT set up and various apps such as Voter Helpline, C-Vigil and PwD. 

WOMEN, PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES, SENIOR CITIZENS & URBAN VOTERS TO BE UNDER PRIME FOCUS FOR INCREASING VOTE PERCENTAGE

Elaborating about the initiatives undertaken by the ECI to simplify the voting process, the CEO said that such initiatives include Online Registration through web portal (www.nvsp.in) and mobile app (Voter Helpline app),Toll Free Helpline Number 1950, verification through SMS and mobile app for the persons with disabilities. 

He also divulged that in order to facilitate the Persons With Disabilities (PwD) voters, a State level workshop was also held recently by Additional CEO Mrs. Kavita Singh in which the District Nodal Officers for PwD voters along with 2 experts of sign language and Braille from each district were trained to spread information amongst persons with disabilities. Such special awareness workshops and camps are being held in all districts. 

He also elaborated that the Women, Persons with disabilities, Senior Citizens and the Urban Voters are under prime focus for achieving the target of increasing the voting percentage. Furthermore, the Postal Ballots would also be focused upon. Another core area would be to sensitize the youth about casting their votes without fear or favour and to achieve this purpose, special awareness camps are being organised in the colleges and universities in which the students are being provided with complete information about the electoral process. Similarly, mobile vans are being sent to all parts of the State so as to encourage populace to exercise their right to vote and ensure that the voter awareness campaign echoes in farthest corners of the state. 

He said that the awareness programmes include ‘Nukkar Nataks’, Quiz Programmes, Signature campaigns and signing of Sankalp patras. Extensive use of Social Media is also being made to spread the message of electoral participation. These activities are being carried out under the supervision of the State level committee headed by Additional CEO and District Level Committee headed by DC/ DEO. The educational institutions, ASHA/Anganwadi Workers, NCC, NSS and Nehru Yuva Kendars are also being involved to ensure the success of this initiative.
