BALANCED AND POSITIVE MEDIA COVERAGE IS NEED OF THE HOUR, OPINES EXPERTS

Public Relations Society of India (PRSI), Chandigarh Chapter on Sunday organized a one day seminar on ‘Role of PR in General Elections’ to commemorate the 34th ‘National PR Day’ at Press Club here under the directions and leadership of Harjeet Singh Grewal, Chairman of PRSI Chandigarh Chapter.

In his inaugural address, General Secretary of PRSI Chandigarh Chapter Dr Jimmy Kansal presenting the significance of PR Day stated that Public Relations and communication professionals across the country celebrates April 21st every year as National PR Day in order to build public opinion on various issues of national and social importance.

The eminent speakers who deliberated on the current issue during this seminar were Vivek Atray, former IAS officer, Ajay Shukla Editor-in-Chief iTV Network, P K Khurana founder chairman of Quik Relations Private Ltd, RK Kaplash vice-chairman of PRSI Chandigarh and Dr Amanpreet Randhawa, head of Center of Advanced Media Studies, Punjabi University, Patiala. They delved upon that right to cast vote is a very vital link for democracy. Voter’s participation in the democratic and electoral process is integral to the successful running of any democracy.

He added that code of ethics for PR professionals was adopted on 21 April 1968, which infact was the beginning of professional public relations in India. “The National PR Day was declared in April 21, 1986 and we re-dedicated ourselves to the cause of Public Relations to scale-up professionalism in all our endeavors”, he said.

The panel discussion focused how the citizens could voice their concerns by taking part in the election process and exercise their voting right.

Presenting his views Vivek Atray stated that PR is an ever evolving profession. Technological advancements and IT have changed everything. Indian elections are the largest elections in the world and role of media has become paramount so balanced and positive coverage is required.

Dr Randhawa deliberated on bridging the gap between PR professionals and academicians. She spoke on the most vital issues of crisis communication and image rebuilding.

Speaking on the occasion Ajay Shukla corroborated on the role of social media, print media and electronic media in elections. He also stressed on the effective mode of communication as a tool to reach the masses.

The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks by Harjinder Kumar, treasurer of PRSI Chandigarh Chapter with the remarks that PRSI believes in excellence which is a sustained march, and not the destination.

Among others present on the occasion included VP Sharma former vice president of PRSI North region, Raj Singh Kadian deputy director PR Haryana, Dr Ashutosh Mishra, head of journalism and mass communication department, Chitkara University, Patiala, Dr Bindu Singh from journalism and mass communication department, Kurukshetra University.
