Alleging as an example of the increasing discrimination against the Scheduled Castes community in the region, Paramjit Singh Kainth, President, National Scheduled Castes Alliance today criticized the decision of the administration of the Union Territory of Chandigarh for not being to appoint any non-official member of the Scheduled Castes community to the Advisory Committee of the UT. The Advisory Committee provides a forum to Union Territories without legislatures for interaction between the Central Government and the elected representatives of the Union Territories on major issues of policy concerning the Territories.

Kainth said, “We will be meeting the Administrator of the UT, Shri V.P. Badnore regarding this issue and any try to find a solution to this discriminatory step by the administration. Chandigarh has a considerable population belonging to the SC community (As per the Population Census 2011 data Schedule Caste (SC) constitutes 19.1% of the population) and hence it requires a reasonable number of representatives of the community to be a part of the Committee.”

Kainth also suggested that, “The committee should keep maintain special consideration over the issues affecting the development of the Scheduled Castes community in the UT and should discuss those issue mandatorily in the meetings. The confidence within the community for the resolution of its problem will only develop if they have their representatives representing them in such committees.”
