Shimla (Vijyender Sharma)

The High Court of H.P. has issued notice to the Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary (Social Justice & Empowerment) to the Government of H.P., Deputy Commissioner, Shimla and Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Shimla on the issue of lack of playgrounds in Shimla city.

A Division Bench comprising Justice Dharam Chand Chaudhary and Justice Jyotsna Rewal Dua passed these orders on a petition taken up suo moto by the Court as Public Interest Litigation on a letter written to the Chief Justice by the children of Main Nabha Estate, Shimla, a renowned Government Colony..

It was alleged in the letter written to the Chief Justice, that the city is becoming overcrowded and more and more buildings are coming up. It has also been alleged that the biggest building in their area, i.e. Block No.34, has been demolished and there is a proposal of Government to construct other 3-4 buildings in its place, thus leaving very little open space for children to play.

The Children have alleged that fresh air, games and exercise are very important for the healthy growth of children but due to lack of playgrounds, children are forced to play on streets, sides of roads and unclean areas, which is very risky and causes health problems. The children have prayed to direct the authorities to construct a playground in place of Block No.34, which has been demolished in Nabha Estate, Shimla.
