Chandigarh Press Club criticises the Delhi Police for threatening Indian Express journalist with criminal prosecution if he doesn’t join a probe.

The Chandigarh Press Club has criticised the Delhi Police for threatening Indian Express’ Delhi-based journalist Mahender Singh Manral with criminal prosecution if he doesn’t join a probe and subsequently creating pressure on the journalist to disclose the sources of the news is highly condemnable and is against the ethics of the independent journalism.

Mr. Saurabh Duggal, Secretary General, of the Club said, the Delhi Police sent a notice to the Indian express reporter, through the city editor and chief reporter, requiring the journalist, who had reported that police investigations found the possibility of the audio clip of Tablighi Jamaat leader, Maulana Saad, being doctored, to join a probe on this matter.

According to the news report, the crime branch of the Delhi Police had suggested that an audio clip which purported to show the Tablighi Jamaat leader asking his followers to disobey social distancing norms as protection against COVID-19 which was a part of the FIR against the Mulana may have been doctored.

The police rejoinder was duly published by the newspaper in question along with the reporter’s comments. The matter should have ended there, but the Delhi Police went on to victimise the Indian Express reporter by threatening him with criminal prosecution if he doesn’t join a probe. The Chandigarh Press Club stands in solidarity with the reporter.
