CHANDIGARH PRESS CLUB CONDEMNS REGISTRATION OF CASE AGAINST SENIOR JOURNALIST

Chandigarh Press Club condemns Punjab Police and Punjab government for registering a case against journalist of Punjabi Jagran Jai Singh Chhibber. It is an attack on the freedom of press. The club also condemns the Himachal Government for registering FIRs against six journalists in the state. 

Chandigarh Press Club condemned the Punjab Police for registering a case against a journalist of Punjabi Jagran Jai Singh Chhibber. He was booked by Chamkaur Sahib police for writing a story on a minister, of course without naming him, for following suggestions of astrologers. Chamkaur Sahib is Assembly segment of Punjab minister Charanjeet Singh Channi. 

Today morning, the Chamkaur Sahib police raided the premises of the journalist Jai Singh Chhibber, who is also our esteemed member, while he was out on his official assignment. The police were rude while talking to his daughter and told her to convey it to her father to visit Chamkaur Sahib station in one week time. The Chandigarh Press Club condemned the action of the Punjab Police and demanded a strict action against the concerned Chamkaur Sahib police personnel. It is an attack on the freedom of the press and the club has taken the issue with the Punjab Chief Minister. 

Mr. Saurabh Duggal, Secretary General of the Club said, police have registered a case against the journalist for doing a story on a complaint forwarded by a person from Morinda. The police have booked a case on IPC 180, 505 and section 67 of IT act.

The Chandigarh Press Club stands in solidarity with the journalist.Earlier, the Himachal Police has also registered FIRs against six journalists for doing stories highlighting the shortcomings of the government.The Chandigarh Press Club condemned the Himachal Government action and urges the state authorities to get the FIRs quashed as per the profession in the law. It is an attack on the freedom of the press.
