A joint webinar on “Responding to Domestic Violence during Covid -19”was organised today by the Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and

Archaeology and Centre for Social Work and Centre for Human Rights,Panjab University. The Dean University Instructions, Professor R.K Singla presided over the Webinar. Dr Paru Sidhu, Chairperson Department of AIHCA welcomed the speakers and participants. The two speakers were Professor Neelam Sukhramani, Deptt of Social Work, Jamia Milia Islamia University, New Delhi and Monica Tiwary, Crisis Intervention and Counselling Expert for the NGO Shakti Shalini.

Professor Neelam spoke on intimate partner violence specifically. She talked about the fact that other than promulgating laws, much more needed to be done at the ground level to ease the situation of violence against women. The role of the family and media are very critical in defining the perception of an ideal woman or wife. According to Professor Neelam the media needs, very importantly to develop a positive masculinity image rather than a toxic masculinity image. Structural changes at multiple levels were needed according to her to mitigate the issue of domestic violence. Moreover she stressed on societal empathy to help women in distress.

The second speaker Monica Tiwary, with her long experience of  working with an NGO, narrated the ground level realities of helping victims of domestic violence. Monica also spoke about how helping survivors of gender /sexual violence was all the more difficult during the lockdown periods.

Both the speakers emphasised that the legal system, police, media, social care sectors all needed to work together to end domestic violence.  Dr Monica Munjial, Chairperson, Centre for Social Work, Panjab University coordinated
the interactive session which was very meaningful. Dr Namita Gupta, Chairperson, Centre for Human Rights and Duties proposed the Vote of Thanks.
