In her Diwali greetings message, Tulsi Gabbard, the first Hindu member of Congress in the US and also the first Samoan-American voting member of Congress, has said, “If you’ve ever stumbled around in the dark, there’s only one thing you’re looking for - the light. You have to find the light. There’s no other way to make the darkness go away.”
“When we as a society find ourselves in times of darkness like we do today, literally on the brink of nuclear war that could destroy the world as we know it, dealing with rising crime, drug addiction, runaway inflation, and so much more, the same truth applies. We need to step into the light. To find real and lasting solutions, we must step into the light of God’s unconditional love, she said.
Tulsi further said, “God’s love isn’t limited to just one group of people. His love isn’t dependent on our nationality, ethnicity, or even our religion. He sits within each of our hearts, everywhere we go, His love ever-present. From that love, comes care, compassion, empathy, forgiveness—these qualities know no borders or boundaries. If we hold onto anger, resentment, and conflict, there’s no room to let the light of love in. This can be destructive in our personal lives, and potentially catastrophic when it happens between world leaders.Sometimes there are problems or conflicts that seem impossible to resolve. But there is always a way.”She said we honour and celebrate how Lord Ramachandra rescued Sita devi from a fearful situation that seemed impossible to resolve. Reminding us, that with God all things are possible, let’s pray for our leaders. That they will open their hearts and minds to the light of God’s love, and for the sake of all humanity and our future, work toward a peaceful resolution and walk us back from the brink of nuclear catastrophe. And let’s draw inspiration from God’s love in our everyday lives, seeking to be more caring, compassionate, and forgiving.

Quoting one of her favourite prayers, Tulsi said Saint Thomas Aquinas says: “Grant me, O Lord my God, a mind to know you, a heart to seek you, wisdom to find you, conduct pleasing to you, faithful perseverance in waiting for you, and a hope of finally embracing you.” With this she wished peace and happiness on Diwali.
