Gully cricket tournaments, which have been successfully organized over the last two years, have proved to be a boon for the UT Cricket Association for strengthening cricketing culture in the city. The 100% jump in players registrations as compared to last year is a testimony of its success.

This was lauded by Sanjay Tandon, President, UT Cricket Association during the 44th Annual General Meeting of UTCA held at Hotel Novotel on Sunday. While revealing the figures, Tandon informed that there had been a tremendous response from youth for the cricket with an excellent platform like Gully Cricket Tournament, infrastructure laid by BCCI and efficient support staff.

He said during the last season 2023-24, a total of 1400 players got registered, against the 2820 registered in 2024-25. The tournament, which has been registered in the Asia Book of Records, is now a case study for other cricket associations. For UTCA, this tournament served as the bench strength for the BCCI tournament.

Last year, the selectors shortlisted 35 cricketers wherein 50 players after this year’s edition. This year a total of 3072 players from 302 teams participated in the tournament organized in association with Chandigarh Police and various departments of UT Administration.

To make the performance of the teams more effective, emphasis has been laid on fitness and training. By organizing regular camps, the support staff are making their strong points more effective and working on their weak points.

Apart from camps, UTCA has provided exposure to the players through inter-state friendly matches, participation in tournaments like JP Atray memorial tournament and NCA workshops. Motivational and dietary sessions are also being conducted for the mental fitness of the teams so that they can handle pressure situations during the match. He said that last season UTCA had participated in 91 matches of 15 different tournaments of the BCCI. Despite the rain-interrupted matches, the performance of the teams was satisfactory and this time UTCA is confident that the team is eager to perform even better.

Earlier, UTCA’s Secretary Devender Sharma presented the annual report of the association while Treasurer CA Alok Krishan presented the account details to which all present members expressed their consent. Apex member Daniel Banerjee gave the vote of thanks. Present on the occasion includes Joint Secretary Ravinder Singh, Vice President Yuvraj Mahajan along with other apex and other members.
