A seminar aimed at spreading awareness about the causes, symptoms, and prevention of thyroid disorders among women was organized recently. Senior Consultant Endocrinologist, Dr. Gaurav Palikhe from Paras Health, emphasized the importance of regular medical checkups, particularly for women above the age of 35 or those with a family history of thyroid disorders. Routine blood tests for thyroid hormones, including TSH, T3, and free T4, can play a crucial role in early detection and management.

Dr. Palikhe explained that the thyroid gland, a small but essential part of the body located in the neck, controls metabolism and energy levels. While thyroid disorders can affect anyone, women are ten times more at risk compared to men. He highlighted that this higher susceptibility is primarily due to hormonal fluctuations in women, particularly changes in estrogen levels during pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause, which directly impact thyroid function. Genetic factors also play a significant role, as women with a family history of thyroid issues face a higher risk.

During the seminar, Dr. Palikhe urged pregnant women to undergo regular thyroid function tests. He noted that an imbalance in thyroid hormone levels during pregnancy could lead to complications for both mother and child.

He further explained that symptoms of thyroid disorders in women are often subtle and can mimic everyday health concerns. Common symptoms include sudden weight gain or loss, fatigue, hair thinning, mood swings, and irregular menstrual cycles. Ignoring these symptoms can lead to severe complications.

Dr. Palikhe also emphasized the importance of a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, and stress management in preventing thyroid disorders. In severe cases, timely treatment, including medication or surgery, can restore normal thyroid function and improve the overall quality of life.

He concluded by stressing the significance of awareness, early detection, and proper treatment in managing thyroid disorders effectively.
