PU JOINTLY ORGANISED AN EXTENSION LECTURE ON “SCIENCE, SCIENTIFIC TEMPERAMENT, AND SOCIETY.”

The Department of Education and the Department of Zoology, Panjab University today jointly organised an extension lecture on the theme “Science, Scientific Temperament, and Society.”  

Distinguished Senior Scientist and former Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar Prof. Jai Rup Singh delivered the keynote lecture. He emphasised the necessity of cultivating scientific temperament in all aspects of life. It is not necessary to be a scientist to make a scientific discovery, he said. He highlighted the power of young students' innovations and various government initiatives aimed at promoting scientific temperament. 

The session was chaired by Prof. Rumina Sethi, Dean University Instructions (DUI), Panjab University, Chandigarh. Prof. Sethi underscored that scientific thinking is not confined to scientists alone but can be practiced by anyone with curiosity. She also emphasised the importance of bridging the gap between arts and science to foster holistic knowledge and interdisciplinary innovation. 

Earlier, the event commenced with a welcome address by Prof. Satvinderpal Kaur, Chairperson of the Department of Education, who welcomed the guest speaker and other dignitaries. Dr. Ravinder Kumar, Chairperson, Department of Zoology, delivered the vote of thanks, acknowledging the insightful contributions of the speaker and the enthusiastic participation of attendees. He emphasised the importance of fostering scientific temperament in academic and everyday life and encouraged continued engagement in scientific discourse. 

The event successfully reinforced the significance of scientific inquiry in shaping a progressive and rational society. It inspired students and scholars to contribute to scientific advancements for the betterment of humanity, while also advocating for an inclusive and interdisciplinary approach to knowledge creation.
