The Government College of Commerce and Business Administration (GCCBA), Sector 50, Chandigarh, on Tuesday celebrated the festival of Lohri with great enthusiasm and traditional fervour, bringing together students, faculty and staff in a spirit of joy and social responsibility.
The celebrations commenced with the lighting of the bonfire by Professor Nisha Aggarwal, Principal of the college, in the presence of Dr Sangam Kapoor, Dean of the college, along with teaching and non-teaching staff and members of the student community. A langar was organised collectively, reflecting the values of sharing, unity and compassion associated with the festival.
This year’s Lohri celebration was dedicated to the girl child by the Gender Sensitisation Society of the college, emphasising the importance of supporting and empowering young girls in society. On this occasion, woollen clothes were distributed to girls, and sweets were shared with children, spreading warmth and happiness during the winter season.
(SUBHEAD)Addressing the gathering, Professor Nisha Aggarwal highlighted the social significance of the celebration and stated, “Festivals like Lohri remind us of our cultural roots while also giving us an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment towards social responsibility. By dedicating this celebration to the girl child, we aim to promote equality, dignity and empowerment within our society.”
The Red Ribbon Club actively contributed to the social cause by distributing soaps and other essential items, thereby promoting awareness about hygiene and overall well-being. Adding colour and vibrancy to the event, the Cultural Committee organised a cultural programme featuring traditional music and dance performances that beautifully captured the spirit and heritage of Lohri.
The festive atmosphere was further enhanced as participants enjoyed traditional Lohri delicacies such as peanuts, gajak and popcorn around the bonfire. The celebration successfully blended cultural traditions with social awareness, fostering a strong sense of community, inclusiveness and collective joy among students and staff of the college.
