IN VIEW OF THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE RAINS, HIMACHAL DECLARED NATURAL CALAMITY AFFECTED AREA: CHIEF MINISTER

THE CHIEF MINISTER URGED THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT TO PROVIDE FULL-HEARTED ASSISTANCE TO THE STATE IN THIS HOUR OF DISASTER SO THAT THE ACTIVITIES RELATED TO BRINGING NORMALCY IN THE STATE COULD BE EXPEDITED WHILE BRINGING LIFE BACK ON TRACK.

Chief Minister Thakur Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu said here today that in view of the damage caused due to heavy rains in the State, the State Government has declared the entire State as 'Natural Calamity Affected Area'. Due to heavy rains, cloud bursts and landslides, which have been going on for the past few days, there has been a huge loss of life and property in the state. Other resources including drinking water, power supply system and roads have also suffered heavy damage in the state.

So far, more than 12 thousand houses have been damaged in the state and 330 people have lost their precious lives. So far, a loss of more than Rs 10 thousand crore has been estimated in the state. The Chief Minister said that agriculture and horticulture have also suffered huge losses in the state.

(SUBHEAD)He said that the communication system in the state has also been adversely affected. Normal life has been thrown out of gear in the state and commercial activities have also not remained untouched by the calamity. He said that people had to take shelter in relief camps in many areas of the state. In view of the danger, many people have been safely evacuated from their homes and shifted to other places.

Thakur Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu said that the state government is working on a war footing for relief, rescue and rehabilitation. All possible help is being ensured to the disaster affected.

He said that when the weather  favourable, the concerned districts and departments will assess the property, livestock, infrastructure and other damages and present them before the state government for reconstruction and appropriate action.

The Chief Minister urged the Central Government to provide full-hearted assistance to the state in this hour of disaster so that the activities related to bringing normalcy in the state could be expedited while bringing life back on track.
