In compliance with the directions received from the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), the District Magistrate Fazilka has ordered to shut all slaughterhouses for a day on April 4 in view of Mahavir Jayanti (Bhagwan Mahavir Janma Kalyanak)in the district.

Notably the Vishwa Jain Sangthan Punjab Chapter Coordinator Dr Sandeep Jain had last month sent two letters to Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to change the date of Bhagwan Mahavir Janma Kalyanak in the state holidays list from April 4 to April 3.

The organisation had also demanded a ban on slaughter houses, sale of non-veg and egg products as well as alcoholic drinks on the day

Dr Jain had said that in the list of Holidays declared by Govt of Punjab, Holiday on Bhagwan Mahavir Janma Kalyanak is shown as April 4. As per Jain belief the date of birth falls on April 3. The Governments of Rajasthan, Karnataka, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and other states had changed the holiday date to April 3 but the Punjab Govt did not respond to the request. The Jain Sabha Abohar had also submitted a memorandum to the DC seeking ban on slaughter houses, sale of meat, eggs and liquor for a day.(SUBHEAD)
