THE VALEDICTORY SESSION OF NATIONAL CONFERENCE CUM WORKSHOP HELD

The valedictory session of National Conference cum Workshop on “Multidisciplinary Approaches in studies, Conservation and Resource Development of Medicinal and Ornamental orchids & Orchid show’ organized by The Orchid Society of India (TOSI) jointly with and at Department of Botany, Panjab University, Chandigarh, in co-operation with Botanical Survey of India, Kolkata under the aegis of RUSA was inaugurated by the Director, Botanical Survey of India, Dr. A A Mao.

At the outset, Prof. (Dr.) A K Bhatnagar, President, TOSI for gave welcome address. Chairpersons of six technical sessions read their reports and suggested recommendations.

There were 14 invited speakers, 17 poster presentations and 20 oral presentations. Awards were given to the winners of various competitions [painting (school children from Chandigarh and adjoining places), photography, floral arrangement, exhibition, poster and oral presentation competitions] held during the conference. The Guest of honour Dr. Kanchit Thammasiri, in his address appreciated the efforts of The Orchid Society of India in successfully organizing the event and in creating awareness about these plants and promoting their conservation and commercialization in the country.

(SUBHEAD)(MOREPIC3)  In his valedictory address, Dr. Mao stressed the need of development of cost effective protocols for in vitro propagation of medicinally important and/or floriculturally significant orchids and motivating young researchers for taking up various challenges in orchid researches. Vote of thanks was proposed by Prof. (Dr.) Promila Pathak, Secretary, TOSI and convener of National conference. The function was well attended by more than 150 participants including distinguished scientists, teachers, research scholars, and students.
