Advocate Surinderpal Singh Tinna, former Additional Advocate General of Punjab, confirmed to the media at Abohar Bar Association office that Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the Senior Superintendent of Police Fazilka to take all the remedial measures within a week for ensuring safety and security of lawyers in the court complex of Abohar.

The direction comes on the PIL filed by Advocate Amritpal Singh Tinna and eighteen others, most of them Advocates, stating that on December 11, a youth Golu Pandit was ambushed when he came to the court complex in connection with hearing of a case under the Arms Act. He was killed in firing and the accused fled from the spot.

Tinna said that the offices of Superintendent of Police, Sub Divisional Magistrate, Suvidha Kendra, Treasury etc besides the courts are located in the same premises but the firing incident has exposed poor security arrangements.

He said that the firing in Moga, the bomb incident in Ludhiana and the shooting of a youth in Abohar expose major shortcomings in security arrangements across the state. The Bar Association members demanded CCTV cameras be installed, entry to the complex should be sensitised, adequate security must be ensured for safety of the law fraternity and other people. They regretted that the administration had not so far taken the required steps.
