Legislator Sandeep Jakhar has expressed anger over the Nehru Park incident in which a dozen youths openly waved swords and injured Municipal Corporation employee Jaswinder Singh for asking them to stop hooliganism.

The MLA said that Nehru Park, which is considered to be the heart of the city, is located near Arorvansh Dharamshala and Govt Sr Sec School. Hundreds of men, women and children visit the park for a walk. A permanent PCR was announced outside the park and checking of vehicles is done almost daily at the corner of the park. Even then some miscreants dared to enter the park with sharp-edged weapons and it appeared they had come to assault someone in broad daylight. It showed people had no fear of police apparently due to lacklustre working.

He said that after each serious incident, the government has been claiming that the crackdown was being tightened against anti-social elements, drug addicts and illegal liquor sellers all over Punjab, but the claims were falling flat.

Sandeep Jakhar said that many citizens had complained to the authorities that parks in Abohar were emerging as hubs of drug peddlers, gamblers and other unsocial elements but the police administration was sleeping soundly.(SUBHEAD)

The Aam Aadmi Party government exhorts people to cooperatein making Punjab free of drug and other crimes, but people do not feel safe even in parks. There have been many incidents of motorcycles being stolen from outside Nehru Park and snatching of mobile phones but the administration has not learned any lesson. Along with the need to launch a decisive campaign against gangsters, it should also be realized that it is absolutely necessary to save the common man, to whom the ruling party had made tempting promises, from ugly incidents. He demanded that the PCR system be strengthened and the security environment be restored in the parks.
