On the occasion of ‘World Sight Day’ on Thursday, hundreds of people joined eye specialists from the tricity for a unique event ‘Walk for Eyes ‘. The walk was organized by Chandigarh Ophthalmological Society (COS) and was supported by SENTISS – a pharmaceutical major specializing in ophthalmic products. The theme of World Sight Day-2022 is 'Love Your Eyes'. Starting from the iconic Rock Garden, the walk ended at the Sukhna Lake.
(MOREPIC1)Padma Shri Prof Jagat Ram, a renowned eye surgeon and ex director of Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) , Chandigarh was the chief guest. On the occasion Prof . Jagat Ram said, “Eyes are the most important parts of our body as these help us see the world. We need to be very conscious about their health and such events help in raising awareness about the need for eye care.”
Prof SS Pandav , Head, Advanced Eye Centre, PGIMER emphasised on the economic burden the families of the blind had to bear and highlighted the importance of community involvement in tackling the menace of blindness in the country.
Prof Jaspreet Sukhija, President, Chandigarh Ophthalmological Society urged the eye specialists of the region to continue maintaining the high standards of eye care available in the tricity and said the society would continue working hard to support them in achieving this goal . (SUBHEAD)
Mr. Inderjit Sood, VP & Head India Business of SENTISS said, “We collaborated with COS as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to hold this walk.” He added, “Ophthalmologists from PGIMER, Chandigarh, GMCH, Sec 32, Chandigarh, GMSH, Sec 16, Chandigarh and leading private hospitals and clinics have come together for this walk to raise awareness about the problem and magnitude of blindness.” Dr S P S Grewal, Founder and Managing Director of Grewal Eye Institute also participated in the walk.
According to statistics available, 2.2 billion people have a visual impairment and nearly half of this visual impairment is preventable or avoidable. It is to be noted that without urgent and sustainable efforts, the number of people who are blind could reach 115 million by 2050.
At the finish point -Sukhna Lake, an event was held in which all participants were given certificates. A skit to raise awareness about the need for eye care was also presented. Dr Chintan Malhotra, Honorary Secretary, COS, proposed the vote of thanks.
