At a time when floods have ravaged several border villages along the Sutlej, the Health Department has emerged as a saviour for many families. In a remarkable effort, two pregnant women—Manjit Kaur of Tendi Wala and Manpreet Kaur of Kaluwala—were rescued from flood-hit areas and safely shifted to Civil Hospital, where they delivered their babies under medical supervision.
Civil Surgeon Dr. Rajwinder Kaur said Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh had directed the department to extend all possible medical assistance to flood-affected families, especially to expectant mothers. Acting on these instructions, special medical teams evacuated the two women from their marooned villages and ensured safe deliveries at the hospital.
Sharing her ordeal, Manjit Kaur said her family was deeply worried about how she would access delivery services amid the rising waters. “We had no idea how we would reach doctors, nurses or even medicines in these conditions. But with the support of the administration and Health Department, help arrived on time and gave us a new hope for life,” she said. Before the floods, she used to attend ANC check-ups and vaccination camps in her village, but the calamity had disrupted everything. “The department took full care of me,” she added.
District Mass Media Officer Sanjeev Sharma, along with Deputy Media Officers Ankush Bhandari and Neha Bhandari, said that under the minister’s directions, pregnant women who wish to stay in hospitals during this crisis are being provided homely care, proper food and complete medical facilities.
Meanwhile, in Bandala village, a 73-year-old woman, Manjit Kaur, wife of Bhajan Singh—already a hypertension patient—fell seriously ill after her house was inundated and crops destroyed. Dr. Raju said she, along with six other patients from affected villages and relief camps, had been admitted to hospital for treatment.
Officials reiterated that the Health Department is working shoulder to shoulder with flood-hit families, running special medical camps and ensuring timely treatment to those in need.
