To assess the water levels and the prevailing situation during the ongoing monsoon season, Deputy Commissioner Ferozepur Deepashikha Sharma, and Deputy Commissioner Tarn Taran, Rahul, jointly visited the Harike Head Works on Wednesday.
During the visit, both officers interacted with officials on site to review the current water situation and assess preparedness measures in nearby villages that could potentially be affected by flooding.
DC Ferozepur, Deepashikha Sharma, said that the situation in Ferozepur district remains completely normal and there is no threat of floods at present. She added that officials from the concerned departments are regularly monitoring villages along the Sutlej river and appealed to residents not to believe in rumours or panic. She also advised people to contact the district or tehsil-level control room numbers for any flood-related information or assistance.
DC Tarn Taran, Rahul, said that there has been no loss of life or property in the district so far. However, in villages where rising water levels have created flood-like conditions, the administration has been in contact with residents and is providing full assistance from the government and district authorities. He assured that the district administration is fully prepared and committed to dealing with any situation and extending help to the people.
The review visit was also attended by SDM Zira Gurmeet Singh, IAS officer under training Ms. Lindia, and officials from various departments.
Meanwhile hundreds of acres of agricultural land situated near the Sutlej river have been inundated following a sharp rise in the water level in several villages including Kalu Wala, Tendi Wala, Basti Ram Lal, Nizam Wala, Sultan Wala, Chadiya Wali, Basti Khan ke, Muthian Wali and other situated along the border in this district.
Parkash Singh of Tendi Wala village alleged that the relevant authorities have done nothing to strengthen the “bandhs.” Moreover, we have not received any compensation for our crop loss that happened in 2023,” he added. “In situations like this, leaders from all parties come to our villages only to get their photographs clicked, but in reality, they do nothing. We have decided we will not allow any political leader to enter our village until the land is transferred in our names,” rued Parkash Singh
