In a major political victory for the Aam Aadmi Party in the Municipal Council elections at Zira, AAP candidates secured a dominant win in 6 out of the total 8 wards, leaving the Congress with only two seats while parties like BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal failed to even open their account.
AAP candidate Balwinder Kaur defeated Congress candidate Kulwinder Kaur by 68 votes in ward number 1, while Harjeet Kaur of AAP emerged victorious against Congress candidate Lakhwinder Singh by a margin of 79 votes in ward number 2. In ward number 3, AAP candidate Shinder Kaur registered a convincing victory over Congress candidate Jasbeer Kaur Gill by 254 votes. In ward number 4, AAP candidate Rani also secured victory with a margin of 61 votes. In ward number 5, AAP candidate Kuldeep Kaur defeated the Congress candidate by 77 votes.
However, Congress managed to secure victories in ward numbers 6 and 7 where Pritpal Singh Sandhu and Rahul Chopra emerged as winners respectively. In ward number 8, AAP candidate Dharam Pal Chugh recorded the biggest victory margin of the elections by defeating his rival with a margin of 707 votes.
In ward number 9 and 10 Congress candidates Meenakshi and Gora Singh won respectively while in ward number 11, AAP candidate Harpreet Kaur secured the victory.
In ward number 12 and 13 , Raman Sharma and Hapreet Kaur of Congress won their seats while in ward number 14, independent candidate Rajiv Kumar Sharma secured victory.
In ward number 15 and 17 were won by AAP candidates Kulwinder Kaur and Sukhdev Singh respectively while Congress’s Gurbhagat Singh Gill won the seat from ward number 16.
AAP Zira MLA Naresh Kataria said that the results clearly reflected the strong connect of the Aam Aadmi Party with the people at the grassroots level. He said that the voters of Zira have once again reposed faith in the policies and development-oriented approach of the Punjab government led by CM Bhagwant Mann.
