As the web of fake consultancy agents continues targeting the youth who are dreaming of green pastures abroad, a case has been registered at Hanumangarh against some immigration agents operating from Mohali. The victim, Jai Bhagwan Soni, alleged cheating of Rs 2 lakh on the pretext of sending him to Luxembourg.
According to the police, Soni said that in October 2024, he saw an attractive advertisement of a Mohali-based consultancy on social media. In the advertisement, assurance was given to provide a work permit visa for sending people abroad. When contacted, Akash reportedly lured him with a three-year work permit in Luxembourg and a monthly salary of 3160 euros i.e. about Rs 2 lakh 80 thousand. The total expenditure was said to be Rs 4 lakh.
Akash, Preeti, Vikram and Manav reportedly called him to Mohali and got him to submit the necessary documents including passport, educational certificate and Aadhar card. They allegedly took the first Rs 50 thousand in cash in the name of starting the visa process. After this, on the pretext of visa approval, another Rs 1 lakh was reportedly deposited through UPI on different dates. In this way a total of two lakh rupees were “defrauded”.
The suspects had assured that the visa would be issued within three months. But even after eight months, neither the visa was received nor the money was returned. After this Soni filed a complaint in the court. On the orders of the court, the police have registered a case against the four individuals under sections of cheating and criminal conspiracy. Investigation is ongoing to verify the complaint.
