The Punjab Police has suspended Barnala DSP Satvir Singh with immediate effect following the controversial lathi-charge on sanitation workers, including women, during a protest earlier this week.
According to an order issued by the Office of the Director General of Police (DGP), Punjab, the action was taken under Rule 4(1)(a) of the Punjab Police Punishment and Appeal Rules, 1970, based on a report submitted by the Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Patiala Range,
The incident drew widespread criticism after videos allegedly showed police personnel using force against women sanitation workers. The Punjab State Women Commission sought a report on the matter, while former Punjab Scheduled Castes Commission Chairman Raj Kumar Verka also demanded strict action against the officials involved.
The suspension order directed Satvir Singh’s headquarters during the suspension period will be the 4th Commando Battalion, SAS Nagar (Mohali).
