During the monsoon session of the Punjab Legislative Assembly, a heated debate took place between the government and the opposition regarding the failure to supply canal water at the tail-end areas in Abohar sub-vision.
MLA Sandeep Jakhar raised serious questions in the House, exposing the hollowness of the government’s claims regarding water availability at the tail-ends.
When Jakhar raised the issue of water not reaching the canal tail-ends, Minister Barinder Gyal claimed that farmers were receiving adequate water and that there were no issues whatsoever. Countering this, MLA Jakhar presented data covering a three-month period and demanded that the government produce ‘tail-end data’ to substantiate its claims regarding water availability. Surprisingly, the government possessed no official data to back up its assertion. Criticizing the government’s attitude sharply, MLA Sandeep Jakhar remarked, “When the government has no written data or records regarding water availability at the tail-ends, on what basis is the minister making such a bold claim? These statements, made without any supporting data, are completely baseless, contrary to the ground reality.”
Advocating for the farmers of Abohar in the Assembly, Jakhar stated that even today, farmers in villages located at the tail-ends of the canal network are desperate for every single drop of water for irrigation and drinking purposes. He accused the government of turning a blind eye to reality and attempting to mislead the public. He noted that while farmers are suffering the consequences of withering crops, the government is making unfounded statements to conceal its own failures.
He took on the Chief Minister strongly for falsely claiming that for the first time in 70 years, water had been made available even to the tail-end villages, He invited the concerned minister to visit tail-end villages of Gumjal etc to face the truth.
