A few days ago, a parakeet chick fell from a tree at Govt. Model Sr. Sec. School, Cemetery Road, Ludhiana, was rescued and sent for treatment and rehabilitation following intervention by People for Animals Ludhiana.
The chick was found with a broken beak after falling from its nest. Mr. Jatinder Kumar, school staff, kept it safe and began feeding it. Remarkably, other parakeets, probably from its family, continued to visit and feed the chick from nearby trees.
Though the parakeet has now grown, it suffers from a deformity in its feet and a damaged beak, making survival in the wild difficult. Recognizing its need for special care, Ms. Monika Jain, school staff, contacted Dr. Sandeep Kumar Jain, President, People for Animals Ludhiana.
As the Indian parakeet is protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, Dr. Jain contacted the Chief Wildlife Warden, Punjab, and the DFO (Wildlife). On their directions, Anu, Beat In-charge (Wildlife), along with her staff, visited the school and took the bird into possession for treatment and rehabilitation. Efforts are underway to assess whether rehabilitation for release is possible or if long-term care will be required.
Dr. Sandeep Jain, President, PFA Ludhiana, said, “This case shows how compassion from common people and timely intervention can save a life. We appeal to citizens to report injured birds and animals to us immediately.
