HIGH COURT ORDER PAVES WAY FOR FEROZEPUR MC PRESIDENT POLL ON THURSDAY

Vikram Ditya Sharma/Ferozepur

After a delay of more than six weeks, Ferozepur Municipal Council is set to elect its President and Vice-President on July 16 following directions from the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The court ordered the district administration to convene a meeting of elected councillors after Councillor Ashok Kumar and others filed a writ petition seeking the elections. The entire proceedings will be videographed and the recording preserved in the Deputy Commissioner’s custody.

The Municipal Council election results were declared on May 29, with Congress securing a clear majority by winning 18 wards. BJP won seven wards, AAP five, while two Independents and one BSP candidate were also elected.

Former MLA Parminder Singh Pinki said Congress, along with BSP support, enjoys a clear majority and had approached the High Court to ensure a democratic and transparent process. He added that the elections would be held under the supervision of Senior Advocate Nikhil Goyal.

The prolonged delay had triggered political speculation and concerns over pending civic issues, including sewerage, traffic management, encroachments and maintenance of public amenities. Several names, including Ashok Sachdeva, Monty, Rishi Sharma and Reeta Rani, are being discussed for the top post.

SDM Abhishek Sharma, the convener for the election process, said the polling would be conducted in a fair, transparent and peaceful manner.
