NSSO REGIONAL OFFICE, CHANDIGARH CELEBRATES 19TH STATISTICS DAY

In recognition of the remarkable contributions made by Professor P.C. Mahalanobis in the fields of economics, planning, and the development of statistics, the Regional Office, Chandigarh of the National Statistical Office (NSO) celebrated the 19th Statistics Day on Sundaythe Mini Hall, Kendriya Sadan, Sector-9, Chandigarh. The event marked the birth anniversary of the Father of Indian Statistics, Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis. This year’s theme is “75 Years of the National Sample Survey.”

The event was inaugurated by Shri Deepak Mehra, Deputy Director General, NSSO (FOD), RO Chandigarh, who shared insights into the life and contributions of Prof. Mahalanobis.

On this occasion, Shri Pavitar Singh, Director (Retd.), Press Information Bureau (PIB), served as the Guest of Honour and highlighted Prof. Mahalanobis’s invaluable role in strengthening the Indian statistical system. He also underscored the importance of statistics in everyday life.
Shri R.K. Mor, Additional Director, Department of Economic and Statistical Analysis, Haryana, provided an overview of the evolution of the National Sample Survey in India. Shri Vasudev Sharma, Senior Statistical Officer (Retd.), shared personal experiences from the field and discussed challenges faced during data collection.

As part of the ceremony, participants offered floral tributes to Prof. Mahalanobis. The event also featured engaging activities, including a quiz competition, essay writing, and a poster exhibition.

A total of around 60 participants, comprising officers, officials, and university students associated with the field of statistics, attended and participated enthusiastically. The celebration successfully promoted awareness about the critical role of statistics in national development.
