Hindus have offered condolences on the death of Russell Marion Nelson, 17th president and prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), also known as Mormon Church, who died on September 27 in Salt Lake City (Utah, USA).

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that they were saddened by the passing of President Nelson, 101, whose energetic leadership was known for bridge-building across faiths, cultures, and political divides; calls for greater love and unity among people of diverse backgrounds; compassionate reform; connecting with people across continents; emphasizing inclusion and peacemaking, etc.

A leader with kinder and gentler approach; highly influential Nelson was instrumental in leading the Church towards enhanced humanitarian aid, expanding community service projects, forging partnerships, fostering collaboration and mutual respect among religions/denominations, guiding the church through the COVID-19 pandemic with messages of hope and spiritual strength, humanitarian outreach, increasing the church’s international disaster response, prioritizing humanitarian aid, promoting interfaith dialogue, wide-ranging reforms, etc.; Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, pointed out.

Rajan Zed further said that Nelson, a pioneering heart surgeon, has left a legacy marked by global outreach, institutional reform, spiritual focus, etc. He has led initiatives that have had a positive global impact.

Zed has read invocations in 124 legislative bodies of Utah, including Utah Senate and House.

Formally organized in upstate New York in 1830, LDS, now headquartered in Salt Lake City, has over 17.5 million members and 31,676 congregations worldwide.
