The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB), in line with the zero tolerance policy adopted by the Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann led Punjab government, has apprehended an ASI Jaswinder Singh posted at police station Bhogpur, district Jalandhar for demanding a bribe Rs. 5 lakh.

Disclosing this here today an official spokesperson of the state VB said the arrest has been made following a complaint lodged by a resident of Maqsudan, Jalandhar city on the Chief Minister’s Anti Corruption Action Line portal.

During the enquiry, it was found that the complainant was nominated as an accused in a case registered at police station Bhogpur. ASI Jaswinder Singh, being the Investigating Officer of that case, demanded a bribe of Rs. 5,00,000/- in the name of SHO Rajesh Kumar for not arresting the complainant as well as not showing the recovery of the pistol, and for not seeking further police remand of the already arrested accused Surjit Singh. Complainant had recorded the conversation when accused ASI was demanding a bribe of Rs. 5 Lakh, he added.

He further said that the bribe demand was reduced to Rs. 2,00,000/- upon the complainant's request. During the enquiry, no direct evidence has come on record regarding any bribe demand by SHO Rajesh Kumar. The role of the SHO will be examined during further investigation.

The spokesperson informed that in this regard a case under prevention of corruption act has been registered against the accused at VB Police Station Jalandhar range. Further investigation into this case was underway.
