The 10th Armed Forces Veterans Day was celebrated in Chandigarh today to honour and remember the valour, service, and supreme sacrifices made by India’s Armed Forces veterans. Armed Forces Veterans Day is commemorated annually on January 14, marking the retirement of India’s first Indian Commander-in-Chief, Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa, in 1953, who led the Indian Armed Forces to victory in the 1947 war.

The event was organised by the Zila Sainik Welfare Office, U.T. Chandigarh.

Shri H. Rajesh Prasad, IAS, Chief Secretary, Chandigarh Administration, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Addressing the veterans and Veer Naris, he stressed the importance of prioritising their health and well-being and urged them to continue serving as role models for the younger generation in the spirit of nation-building. On the occasion, Veer Naris as well as Gallantry and Distinguished Award winners were honoured by the Chief Guest.

He also highlighted the enhancement of rates under various welfare schemes being implemented by the Zila Sainik Welfare Office, U.T. Chandigarh. Assuring continued support, he stated that veterans may submit their suggestions or grievances in writing to the Zila Sainik Welfare Office for necessary action.

Shri Nishant Kumar Yadav, IAS, Deputy Commissioner-cum-President, Zila Sainik Board, Chandigarh, extended a warm welcome to the veterans on this special occasion. He expressed gratitude for their courage, dedication, and selfless service to the nation and paid his respectful homage to the Veer Naris whose family members laid down their lives in the defence of the country.

Earlier, Col. Harjeet Singh Ghuman, Zila Sainik Welfare Officer, in his welcome address, greeted the veterans and acknowledged their unwavering commitment and sacrifices for the nation. He apprised the gathering of steps taken to enhance the rates of various welfare schemes being provided to Veer Naris, widows, veterans, and their wards. He also informed that renovation of the Sainik Rest House at Sector 21-D, Chandigarh, is being taken up on priority, which will provide improved amenities, including better guest rooms and catering facilities.
