As part of National Road Safety Month–2026, being observed from 1st January to 31st January 2026, the Chandigarh Traffic Police, under the leadership of Dr.Sagar Preet Hooda, IPS, Director General of Police, UT Chandigarh, and the guidance of Sh. Pushpendra Kumar, IPS, Inspector General of Police, U.T., Chandigarh, Sh. Sumer Partap Singh, IPS, Senior Superintendent of Police (Security & Traffic), and under the close supervision of Sh. Lakshay Pandey, DANIPS, DSP/Traffic (R&D) Road Safety, and Dr. Parvesh Sharma, Inspector, In-charge Chandigarh Traffic Police,going to conduct series of road safety awareness activities across the city during the month.
As part of National Road Safety Month–2026, Chandigarh Traffic Police organized a Road Safety Awareness Programme for the general public at Sector 46/47/48/49 Chowk, Chandigarh. The programme aimed to create awareness among commuters, motorists, pedestrians, and road users about traffic rules and the importance of disciplined road behaviour to ensure smooth traffic flow and congestion-free movement at busy intersections.
The programme was organized in collaboration with Bhartiya Ekta Manch. Members of Bhartiya Ekta Manch, including Ms. Sunita Thakur, President; Sh. Punit Mahajan, General Secretary; Sh. Narendar Jakait, Chairman; Sh. P.K. Rattan, Chief Advisor; and Sh. Roshan Lal Sharma, Media Advisor, actively participated and supported the initiative. Their involvement strengthened community participation and reinforced the message of road safety and responsible road behaviour among the general public.During the programme, the general public was sensitized on key traffic issues that often lead to traffic jams, such as improper lane discipline, wrong-side driving, unnecessary stopping at intersections, illegal parking, blocking free left turns, and non-compliance with traffic signals.
Dr. Parvesh Sharma, Inspector, In-charge of the Children Traffic Park, along with her dedicated awareness team comprising HC Alkesh HC Jagroop Singh, HC Rahul, Sr. Ct. Rajiv, Ct. Pardeep, Ct. Neeraj, and Volunteer Shambar, educated the public on essential traffic rules and regulations. The team focused on maintaining lane discipline, proper use of indicators, wearing seat belts and BIS-standard ISI-marked helmets, switching off engines at red lights to reduce pollution, avoiding overspeeding, and strictly obeying road signage and traffic signals.Special emphasis was also placed on giving way to emergency vehicles such as ambulances, fire brigade, and police vehicles, and the importance of assisting accident victims. The public was informed about the Good Samaritan law, which protects citizens from civil or criminal liability while helping injured persons.
The awareness team also sensitized road users about the dangers of mobile phone use while driving, underage driving, unnecessary honking, and driving under the influence of alcohol. Citizens were advised to park vehicles only at designated parking places and avoid parking on roads, footpaths, cycle tracks, and near turns, as such violations cause traffic congestion.
Further, the public was informed about the importance of holding a valid driving licence, vehicle maintenance to control emissions, and the penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act for violations such as driving without a licence, tampering with or hiding vehicle number plates, and other traffic offences. Key provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and its amendments, Central Motor Vehicles Rules, and Motor Vehicle Driving Regulations were also explained in simple terms.
At the conclusion of the programme, the public was encouraged to voluntarily adopt safe and responsible road behaviour and to strictly follow traffic rules so that traffic jams can be avoided and roads remain safe for all. The primary objective of this initiative is to move towards the goal of zero road accident fatalities and make Chandigarh a safer and more disciplined city in terms of traffic management.
