The Member of Parliament from Sirsa, General Secretary of the All Indian Congress Committee and former Union Minister, Kumari Selja strongly criticised the Haryana government’s Budget 2026–27, alleging that the state’s education system is being systematically weakened instead of strengthened.
Reacting sharply to the budget, Kumari Selja said the government’s policies clearly indicate a deliberate attempt to weaken government schools and colleges. She pointed out that during the Congress government in 2013–14, nearly 21.77 per cent of the total state budget was allocated to education, whereas in the current 2026–27 budget it has been reduced to 10.80 per cent. According to Kumari Selja, such a sharp reduction in spending on a crucial sector like education reflects that it is no longer a priority for the present government.
Kumari Selja expressed serious concern over the condition of government schools in the state. Nearly 90 per cent of government schools in Haryana are functioning without principals or headmasters, she said, which has severely affected both administrative management and the academic environment in these institutions. Kumari Selja said When schools lack leadership, it becomes extremely difficult to ensure quality education for students.
The Sirsa MP also raised concerns about the condition of higher education institutions in the state. She said nearly 50 per cent of teaching posts are vacant at Kurukshetra University, while about 69 per cent posts are vacant at Chaudhary Bansi Lal University in Bhiwani. Similarly, around 60 per cent posts remain vacant at Chaudhary Devi Lal University in Sirsa and also at Chaudhary Ranbir Singh University in Jind.
Kumari Selja alleged that the government is deliberately weakening the public education system to push people towards private institutions. If the government was truly serious about improving education, it would immediately fill vacant posts, strengthen infrastructure in schools and increase budget allocations for the sector, she said. Selja criticised the budget for neglecting farmers, particularly cotton growers, claiming that allocations for cotton farmers have been significantly reduced, which could adversely affect their economic condition. Describing the budget as disappointing, she said it lacks a concrete development roadmap and instead appears to be “a bundle of slogans and speeches”. According to her, the government has failed on crucial issues concerning education, farmers and youth.
MP Kumari Selja to Chair DISHA Meeting in Sirsa on 6th, March.
Kumari Selja will chair a meeting of the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) on March 6 at 10 am at the Panchayat Bhawan in Sirsa. Prior to the meeting, she will meet members of the public at 9:30 am at the PWD Rest House in Sirsa to hear their grievances.
The meeting will review development works being implemented in the district under various central government schemes. Senior district administration officials, representatives of different departments and committee members are expected to attend. Later the same day at 3 pm, Kumari Selja will preside over another DISHA meeting at the DRDA Hall in Jind. On March 7 at 11 am, she will attend a programme organised by the District Bar Association at the court complex in Fatehabad.
