On the eve of International Women's Day and Chairperson Sunita Tantia's birthday, Sriganganagar based Tantia University's Skill Development Department has launched an online free sewing and garment making training program for women of the Gujjar Bakarwal community of Jammu and Kashmir.
Skill Development Department Coordinator Dr. Mukesh Goyal informed during a programme that Chairperson Sunita Tantia is of view that women's empowerment is essential for the overall development of society. She stated that women of the Gujjar Bakarwal community possess excellent skills in the traditional Kashmiri art of embroidery, and that combining this art with modern sewing and garment making skills can become a powerful means of self-reliance for them.
(SUBHEAD)For this, she has also praised Naisha Palawat, Yashkit Jain, Meenal Jain, and Preet Palawat, founders of the partner organization REROOT. She has further stated that Tantia University is continuously striving to empower underprivileged sections of society through education and skill development. Through this training program, women will be trained in the making of salwar suits, ladies' tops, anarkalis, palazzo pyjamas, circular shirts and lehengas, cushion covers, and potli bags, among others. This will enable them to gain self-employment opportunities.
Dr. Vishal Chhabra, Deputy Coordinator of the Department, explained that this initiative was launched as part of the university's social outreach activities. Its objective is to empower women living in remote areas by providing them with skill-based training.
Naisha Palawat of REROOT Institute explained this unique initiative, and participants expressed their gratitude to the university. This will pave the way for new opportunities and self-confidence in women's lives. A large number of participants including Shahida Khanam, who has made special efforts to preserve and promote the embroidery art of Bakarwal community, and Mamta trainer of Skill Development Department were present in the program
