To mark the celebration of International Day for Biological Diversity, the Department of Zoology at Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh, in collaboration with Swachhta Committee (Sciences) and MCM Eco Club- Parivesh organised two activities namely, Campus Bird Count and Campus Insect Count.

The activities aimed to increase students' understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues and to make them aware about the fauna present in the college. During these activities that spanned four days, students explored the college campus for several bird and insect species, and identified 25 different genera of birds and insects present in the college premises.(SUBHEAD)

The students used resources like iNaturalist app, eBird, college faunal lists for identifying the birds and insects. The participants got familiar with the avian and arthropodal fauna in the college and learned how to observe the animals in different habitats.

Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava lauded this praiseworthy initiative to create awareness about biodiversity, which is essential for maintaining the balance among all the living organisms on Earth. She highlighted the importance of such awareness initiatives by adding that biodiversity plays a significant role in regulating the Earth’s climate and providing shelter for all the species of plants and animals.
