After the initiative of the Fazilka district administration and the Border Security Force, the gates of the Pakistan-built barrage on the Sutlej River were opened last night. Due to which, as per the natural flow, water started going downstream rapidly. Before this, the gates of their barrage were reportedly closed by Pakistan.
Some legislators had visited the areas affected due to heavy rains and brought the matter to the attention of the administration. Apart from this, district administrative officials also visited the area.
Official sources said that when the matter came to the notice of Fazilka Deputy Commissioner Dr Himanshu Agarwal, he spoke to the Inspector General of BSF, then a message was conveyed across the border, after which the gates were opened at night, seeing the seriousness of the issue.(SUBHEAD)
Sources said that the rain water from Ferozepur and Muktsar districts entering Fazilka district through drains was causing problems, the district administration quickly coordinated with the BSF and opened the gates on the Pakistan side of the Sutlej River, which facilitated water to flow.
Sutlej River links Ferozepur to the West Punjab province of Pakistan, but near Muhar Jamsher village in Fazilka district, the river enters India again and then takes a U-turn and goes back to the Pakistan side. At the same place, the water of different drainsemanating from Muktsar and Ferozepur falls into the river. Due to the heavy rains in the last two days, the drains were overflowing and a huge amount of water reached Fazilka area, but now the situation is improving rapidly as the flow has started to the Pakistan side.
